I do not typically promote tattoos. Honestly, I applaud anyone who can choose permanent artwork and love it for their entire life!  I can’t even love a pair of shoes for an entire season. HOWEVER – I am ready to get my first tattoo. GASP!!! What changed my mind? With full, perfect eyebrows all the rage, I am ready to take the plunge and get eyebrow tattoos. I know what you are imagining…blue or pink tinted solid line tattoos of old. Oh girl – have things changed?! What’s different? For one thing – the name! This new technology is called 3D Microblading. It isn’t permanent, but it is permanent enough. 3D Microblading eyebrow tattoos last 12 to 24 months.

There are two huge differences between traditional eyebrow tattooing and 3D Microblading. The first difference is ink vs. pigment. Conventional eyebrow tattooing techniques use ink which is watery in texture, but has greater staying power. Whereas, 3D Microblading pigment is much thicker helping to avoid “spilling” under the skin. The second difference is the application and device. Traditional tattooing is done with a motorized needle that injects ink deep under the dermis layer of the skin giving it longevity. However, a single needle injection means you must find Michaelangelo if you anything that looks like real hairs. The microblading device is a small, handheld tool with 6 – 14 micro-needles in a straight line. It leaves fine, crisp strokes resembling individual strands of hair. It really is remarkable. I thoroughly inspected (with my glasses on) a friend who had it done. I cannot tell the difference between her real hair and tattooed hair. Unlike traditional tattoos, 3D Microblading implants pigment in the basal membrane between the epidermis and dermis layer. Over time the pigment will exfoliate out of the skin. UPDATE: I have my new eyebrows and couldn’t be happier with the results! Perfection.

Does it hurt?

Without numbing cream, I would guess that it hurts.  Remember I haven’t done it yet, but those who have say it absolutely fine with numbing cream.

UPDATE: Now I can answer this with first-hand experience. It does hurt a little bit, but with a little more numbing time I do not think I would have felt a thing. It is different from any other treatment. It is a little like small scraps against your skin. I would say this is on the EASY end of the medspa treatment spectrum.

What is the first session like?

The first session will last anywhere from 1.5 hours to 2 hours.  Why?  This really is like creating a piece of art on your face.  A custom brow shape is designed specifically for you based on your bone structure, eye placement, face shape and other factors. Pigment selection is determined by your hair color and eyebrow color. After you are happy with the design, you must allow time for numbing.  Finally the magic begins! How fun is this? You do not have to hide from the world afterwards. You can walk right out the door, ready to show off your new brows. Now I will warn you the initial color is stronger than the final result.  I am not saying you will look like Groucho Marx.  It will take 2 – 3 weeks for your eyebrows to soften. UPDATE: My eyebrows looked awesome right after she was finished. The color softened in 4-5 days to the perfect shade.  So good!
